Q: Are there any instructional videos or short makeup sessions you would recommend that I buy or attend to learn how to make myself up?

A: There are a lot of really high-quality videos at your disposal — and they’re actually free, if you know where to find them — like on marieclaire.com!). Some of my other favorites are on YouTube. I met California-based makeup artist Tricia Sawyer years ago when she was consulting for Prescriptives. Now, she has her own makeup line and creates these smart, easy-to-follow how-to videos, which cover topics from applying foundation to creating smoky eyes. Her YouTube screen name is “thechuckt.” I also like some of Sephora’s videos, on YouTube under the name “SephoraEditor.” Now, for really personalized lessons, I love going to the Armani Cosmetics counter at Barneys in New York City. They offer a free makeup lesson and film you through the entire process, then they give you a DVD of it to take home and review. You’re not required to buy any products, but if you love the look, you’ll need them anyway — and now you know how to make the most of them. By Ying Chu, the Marie Claire Beauty Director
